Sparring
We practise three (3) types of sparring:
five-step sparring, one-step sparring, and free sparring.
Five-step Sparring:
Beginners (9th kyu and 8th kyu) usually start with five-step
sparring. In this exercise, two people facing each other: one
as attacker and the other as blocker. The targets must be announced
(face or stomach) clearly to the opponent (the other person).
The attacker attacks five times in five steps, while the blocker
moves backward blocking. After the last attack, the blocker
counters the attack with a reverse punch. Then, they switch
roles as attacker or blocker.
In this exercise, students are to learn stepping (forward and
backward) while executing technique, target areas, and the course
of action of the technique. As students reach higher ranks and
have more control, the distance is shortened. Distance and control
are developed through this exercise.
